Some decisions look like they’re about timing, paperwork, or authority.
In reality, they’re about whether people trust you when things get tight.
There was a moment in my career where my CV was completely useless.
Friday night.
Boardroom.
Lawyers everywhere.
A regulatory deadline at midnight.
I was holding the pen.
On paper, I had full authority to sign an acquisition.
In reality, the final approval sat in another time zone.
As the clock moved closer to midnight, the pressure built.
Phones ringing.
Another buyer ready.
Money wired.
Then my BlackBerry buzzed.
“Do not sign. One clause is not approved.”
All eyes were on me.
This is the part no one trains you for.
There is no framework for:
everyone waiting,
the deadline approaching,
and knowing you technically can sign,
but absolutely shouldn’t.
So I did the only thing that gave me room to think.
I stepped out.
And I asked the seller’s CEO to step out with me.
Outside the room, he was furious.
And instead of defending, negotiating, or explaining…
I talked about nothing.
Kids.
Holidays.
Life.
Complete nonsense.
But something shifted.
The tension dropped just enough for honesty to land.
I looked at him and said:
“I want this deal. I’m ready to sign.
But I don’t have full approval yet.
I need your help.”
Silence.
Then something unexpected happened.
He agreed to hold the signed documents in escrow.
He gave me until noon the next day to resolve the final point.
If not, the papers would be shredded and the other buyer would step in.
No contract clause forced that.
No leverage created it.
Only trust.
The deal closed.
Years later, what stayed with me wasn’t the transaction.
It was this:
We celebrate intelligence, expertise, and experience.
But the moments that define careers rarely show up on a CV.
They live in:
how you hold pressure,
how you read the room,
how we show up,
and whether people trust you enough to bend when they don’t have to.
That’s the part we almost never list under “skills”.
